Focus on Ministry –
Altar Servers
In Witness of Their Service…
This is one of the oldest Liturgical Ministries
in the parish. For 100 years mostly boys and young men have served at the altar as acolytes, cross bearers
and censor bearers. Thousands gave of their time and devotion to assist the priest and help to lead the
people in prayer during the Liturgy and other prayer services in Church. They served both the Sunday, weekday Masses and funerals
until the merger of the schools in 1996. After that, some of the older men of the parish stepped forward to serve weekday
Masses and funerals. When the Revised Code of Canon Law was published in 1994 this ministry of the altar
was opened to girls and women. At the present time we have 31 young altar servers, of whom 11 are girls,
and four adult men who serve the weekday Masses and Funeral Liturgies. This ministry is evolving and we encourage young people
and adults, male or female, to step forward to continue this tradition of service.
For the services they perform in the celebration of the Liturgy the parish wishes to
thank all the Altar Servers.
