In Witness of Their Service . . .
The renewal of the Liturgy according to the spirit of Vatican Council II brought some changes in how
we receive Holy Communion. Touching of the Sacred Host by lay people was no longer forbidden as we returned to the practice
of the ancient church of receiving Holy Communion in our hands. Jesus had said “Take and eat...” Receiving Communion
by partaking in the blood of Christ was also opened to the laity. To make it possible for large congregations to receive
Holy Communion under both species the church introduced the practice of allowing lay people to become Extraordinary Ministers
of Communion. Whenever there are insufficient clergy to distribute Communion in a timely manner to the whole congregation
lay people are called upon to assist the priest. It is a privilege for lay men and women as members of the Body of Christ
to come forth from the congregation at Liturgy, to stand before those who come forth to receive and say to them and about
them, the Body of Christ, the Blood of Christ and share with them His Presence in bread and wine. This participation in distributing
Holy Communion also made it possible for the laity to minister to the sick and homebound parishioners in the name of the parish
by taking Holy Communion to their homes and to the hospital. The Body of Christ ministering to the Body of Christ in their
need.
For the service of worship and love they perform at the Liturgy the parish wishes to thank all Extraordinary ministers of
Communion.
