Focus on Outreach: Christians of the Middle East

We should not forget the Christians that have lived in Bethlehem, Jesus Birthplace, for over a 1000 years; the Christians of Iraq suffering and longing for peace; and the refugees of Iraq waiting to return home.

DONATE TO THE CATHOLIC NEAR EAST WELFARE ASSOCIATION

Amidst the upheavals and challenges of the modern world, CNEWA (Catholic Near East Welfare Association) has been a lifeline for those in need throughout the Middle East, Northeast Africa, India and Eastern Europe for more than 75 years.  Founded in 1926 by Pope Pius XI, CNEWA’s mandate is:

  • to support the pastoral mission and institutions of the Eastern Catholic churches.
  • to provide humanitarian assistance to those in need without regard to nationality or creed.
  • to promote Christian unity and inter-religious understanding and collaboration.
  • to educate people in the West about the history, cultures, peoples and churches of the East.

CNEWA does not have inflexible priorities – they are set based upon time, place and urgency of need. We do not compete; if other agencies are doing a good work, we leave it to them. CNEWA addresses those needs that would otherwise “fall through the cracks,” enabling the power of love to reach men, women and children in need.

Some of the projects that they are now involved in are:

·         caring for children in Catholic orphanages who have been orphaned or displaced by the war in Iraq and other conflicts of the Middle East;

·         assisting refugees of the Iraqi war and other conflicts of the Middle East;

·         helping Patriarch Emmanuel III Dely who refuses to abandon his flock in Baghdad to care for his parishioners and others in need of help;

·         training Iraqi Catechists and providing them with Bibles and other literature to catechize the Iraqi people;

·         help the Latin Patriarchate in the deeply divided city of Jerusalem to help Christians, Jews and Muslims explore each other’s faiths.

·         Plus many other worthwhile projects.

If you are interested in helping with any of these projects you can send donations directly to the address below or go on-line to find out more and donate directly.   You can also subscribe to their most interesting magazine, ONE. CONTACT CNEWA at:
